SHADOW

SERIES

(MELBOURNE · AUSTRALIA · 2019 - )

In my ongoing exploration of the intersection between Zen philosophy, contemporary art, and scientific inquiry, the "Shadow Series" emerges as a reflection on the intricate relationship between existence and perception. Building upon the groundwork laid by my earlier "Gravity Series," I delve deeper into the realms of wabi-sabi minimalism, guided by a fusion of Eastern wisdom and Western scientific inquiry.

Central to this series is the notion that contemporary Zen-inspired abstract art need not mimic ancient forms, but rather should embody the spirit of our current age. Drawing from my upbringing in China and my immersion in Western philosophy and art traditions, I navigate the tension between logical reasoning and Zen's emphasis on direct experience.

Through a process of introspection and artistic experimentation, I embark on a multifaceted journey. Utilizing Zen teachings as a guide, I dissect concepts of existence and emptiness, infusing them into my visual explorations. Automatic drawing, a technique steeped in unconscious mark-making, serves as a conduit for channeling thoughts and emotions onto the canvas.

In the "Shadow Series," I employ oval shapes as symbolic vessels, exploring themes of movement, balance, and interconnectedness. Inspired by the delicate interplay between light and shadow, I utilize various mediums, leveraging their versatility to capture the essence of ambiguity and uncertainty.

Each painting in this series serves as a visual meditation, inviting viewers to contemplate the intricate dance between presence and absence, solidity and ethereality. By foregrounding shadows as subjects in their own right, I challenge conventional perceptions of reality, prompting viewers to question the underlying structures of existence.

In my quest for minimalism, I embrace the power of negative space, allowing unpainted areas to breathe life into the composition. Through meticulous attention to color palette and composition, I strive to evoke a sense of tranquility and harmony, mirroring the serenity found in Zen contemplation.

Ultimately, the "Shadow Series" stands as a testament to the enduring dialogue between art and philosophy, inviting viewers to embark on their own journey of introspection and discovery. As shadows dance across the canvas, they serve as poignant reminders of the ephemeral nature of existence, urging us to embrace the beauty of the present moment.
